Painting on the card:
“Winter in Bonita Canyon”
1957-58 Oil on Canvas
Artist: Anna E. Keener
The beautiful picture on the front of this card was painted by Anna E Keener, grandmother of Supreme Liaison, Tsenre Deveraux. This painting is of Bonita Canyon which is near Questa and Red River in New Mexico.
An artist and educator, Anna E. Keener (1895-1982) was born in Flagler, Colorado. She studied with Birger Sandzen at Bethany College in Linsborg, Kansas, achieving B.F.A. and B.A. degrees there in 1916 and 1918, respectively, and received her M.A. from the University of New Mexico (Albuquerque) in 1951. She also studied at the Kansas City Art Institute, the Art Institute of Chicago and Detroit School of Design. She was an art professor at Eastern New Mexico College (now University) and also maintained a studio in Santa Fe. She retired from ENMU in 1953 and moved full time to Santa Fe where she lived until herr death in 1982.
Tsenre has many fond memories of her grandmother who loved to travel, enjoyed meeting new people, and was fearless. Tsenre would often pain alongside her grandmother in her studio and listen to her stories. They would go on hikes, make preserves, and flip pancakes for breakfast. Tsenre was inspired by her grandmother’s incredible talents and considered her to be her best friend.
